1. THMT Kemal Hanjalić Award for the Best Student Paper

Professor Kemal Hanjalić

Professor Kemal (Kemo) Hanjalić is the Founding Chair of THMT. He obtained his PhD from Imperial College, UK (1970) and began his academic career as a teacher and, since 1979 as Professor of Fluid Mechanics and Turbomachinery at Univ. of Sarajevo, Yugoslavia (1964-1991). Subsequently he was Professor at the Michigan Technological University, USA (1993-94) and Professor and Head of Thermal and Fluids Sciences at TU Delft, The Netherlands (1994-2005). In the interim he was Guest Professor of the German Research Association (DFG/Humboldt Foundation) at Friedrich- Alexander Univ. Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany (1991-1994), a DAAD Guest Professor at Darmstadt University of Technology, Germany (2005-2006), Marie Curie Chair at Sapienza University of Rome (2007-2010), and was the Lead Scientist at Novosibirsk State University (2011-2016). He is a prolific researcher in the field of fluid flow, heat transfer, combustion, MHD and environmental flows, and has been recognized as a major contributor to the development of turbulence models. He served as the Mayor of Sarajevo (1985-1987) and was Editor-in-Chief of “Flow, Turbulence and Combustion” (2005-2015). For his professional and scientific achievements, he received the Max Plank Research Award (Ge), Nusselt-Reynolds Prize, AIAA Energy Systems Award, D.Sc.(Eng), from Univ. London (UK), Dr.h.c., from University of Reims (Fr). He is an (Int.) Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (UK) and of the Russian Academy of Science, a Fellow of the Academy of Science of Bosnia and Herzegovina, ASME, IoP and ICHMT. Throughout his distinguished career, Professor Kemal Hanjalić has served as a dedicated educator and cherished mentor to countless research students worldwide. The THMT community is deeply honored to establish the “Best Student Paper Award” in his name.

Award Details

  • Deadline of application: Applicants must opt into the student paper competition before the full-length paper submission deadline.
  • Number of the awards: 2 awards for each THMT conference.
  • Authorship Requirements: award recipient must be
    • a student (at the time the paper was written).
    • the lead/first author of the paper.
    • the presenter of the paper at the THMT conference.
  • Award Items:
    • a framed certificate/plaque.
    • 1 cash award of $500 USD for each of the two best paper awards (totaling $1000 USD) - Sponsored by Int. J. Heat Fluid Flow.

Applications for the best student paper award are completed during the final paper submission on Fourwaves. During the submission process, authors will be asked to opt into or out of the student paper competition.

2. THMT Yasutaka Nagano Award for Early-Career Researcher Achievements

Dr. Yasutaka Nagano

Dr. Yasuhisa Nagano was born in Mie Prefecture on September 15, 1943. He obtained his B.Sc. at Nagoya Inst. Tech., M.Sc. at Univ. of Tokyo, and Ph.D. from Nagoya University (1977). He established his academic career at Nagoya Inst. Tech. as a Lecturer (1976), Professor (1984), Dean of Students for the Faculty of Engineering (1999), and Vice President (2004). Professor Nagano was energetically involved in the activities of various academic societies. With the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers (JSME), he served as Chair of the Thermal Engineering Division (2000) and as a Board Member (2001–2002). With the Japanese Association of Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers (JARAE), he served as a Board Member (1993–2000 and 2003–2007). With the Japan Society of Fluid Mechanics, he served as Vice President (2000) before assuming the role of President in 2001. With Japanese Society of Heat Transfer, he served as Chair of the Tokai Branch (1999–2001) and Vice President (2002) prior to taking office as President (48th Term, 2009). Professor Yasutaka Nagano achieved outstanding research results in fields such as the measurement of turbulent heat transfer using hot and cold wires, turbulence modeling, large-eddy and direct numerical simulations, and environmental turbulent transport. He served as a long-standing member of the editorial board for the Int. J. of Heat Fluid Flow. Alongside with Professor Kemo Hanjalić, Professor Yasutaka Nagano served as the Co-Chair of THMT from 2000 to June 6, 2015, when he passed away. Throughout his academic career, Professor Yasutaka Nagano was devoted to mentoring young scientists and had a profound influence on world research communities of turbulent flow and heat mass transfer. It is a great honor for the THMT community to establish an “Award for Early-Career Researcher Achievements” in his name.

Award Details

  • Deadline of application: October 15, 2026
  • Number of the awards: 1 award for each THMT conference.
  • Nominee employment: currently holds a position in a university/college/institute, government agency/lab, or industry (including self-employment in a small consulting company).
  • Age requirement: 40 years or younger.
  • Application package: 1 professional nomination letter + 1 CV of the nominee.
  • Award Items:
    • a framed certificate/plaque.
    • a cash award of $500 USD - Sponsored by Int. J. Heat Fluid Flow.

Grant

In accord with the general ICHMT policy, the Organizing Committee of THMT’27 will offer some financial support to students from the Developing Countries to encourage their participation in the symposium. Grants will cover the student registration fees. Note that we will offer the grant to only one successful student from each institution.

The application form should be downloaded, completed, and sent as an e-mail attachment no later than May 1st, 2027. Please send your email to thmt2027@umanitoba.ca and include “Grant Request” as the subject line.

Important: Applicants must arrange for a statement to be supplied by a senior officer of their Institution (university, laboratory etc.) to confirm that funds are not available from that institution, or from any other source, to support the complete costs of attendance. It must be sent separately from the application, by the officer of the Institution. It should be sent by email directly to thmt2027@umanitoba.ca.

An application cannot be considered if this statement has not been received by the closing date. The grants will be available from the Secretary General or the Symposium Chair at the Symposium, subject to presentation of proof of all costs relating to attendance at the meeting (including copies of all relevant receipts, tickets etc).

The grant will not be paid unless full documentation is presented.
